About the Schola Liturgica

Past

Since 1992 the Ichthuscantorij from Harlingen has travelled to Great Britain every other year to sing services in an Anglican Cathedral for a weekSjouke Bruining under the direction of Sjouke and Geke Bruining-Visser.
While visiting Llandaff Cathedral (near Cardiff) in 1994, it appeared that for some singers once every other year was not enough! To meet the needs of those enthusiastic members of the choir, Geke and Sjouke started the Schola Liturgica in September 1994: a project-based choir with a core group of singers from the Ichthuscantorij and additional guest members from all over the Netherlands.
This project-based choir has proved to be a huge success: from 1995 there has been a dedicated group of singers visiting cathedrals in the Summer of the odd-numbered years, also under the direction of Geke and Sjouke.

Geke Bruining-Visser Now there are also activities in other seasons than the Summer: in February 2002 and 2003, choirs sang in Norwich Cathedral. Geke and Sjouke also organized and directed a trip to Ripon Cathedral for another Frisian Choir called "Cantatrix".

Because of this increase in projects, it was decided to convert the Schola Liturgica into an official Foundation. This happened in 2001. Until 1999 both conductors organized it all, but from 2001 there was a foundation board to delegate some of the tasks among the members.

Present and Future

Nine years have passed, and the ideas and activities are still increasing. This website is living proof: we try to reach more and more people to offer them a possibility to sing Anglican services in a Schola Liturgica choir. Therefore we organize an increasing number of projects. Also we use our experience and contacts to organize trips for choirs other than our own. You can find further information, also about other activities, if you choose resources in the menu.
